This is our go-to lodging when attending the opera at Glyndebourne. A wonderful, country house hotel in Uckfield, set on beautiful, expansive private grounds. Comfortably and exquisitely furnished, it is always a pleasure to arrive and occupy the spacious common rooms and assigned bedrooms. As frequently encountered in England, old properties may lack some modern amenities Americans are used to like air conditioning and convenient USB charging ports. Televisions are old and dated; rooms do not have clocks. But rooms are spacious and elegant, with large, tall windows, some of which do not open. Our visit in July encountered unusual hot weather the first days of our stay. Our Nevill suite on the first floor (second floor in American parlance), with west-facing windows, reached almost 90 degrees F (32 C), making things rather unbearable. I felt sorry for guests staying on the second (i.e. third--top) floor. We located a fan, but it offered minimal respite. The Horsted Restaurant serves in two stylish rooms inside and on a terrace outside; tea is served in the dining room, in common rooms and on the terrace. The tiny eponymous bar may have been a former pantry. Or closet. Not conducive to comfortable socializing. Food is quite good, but service seems understaffed when there are numerous diners. On one occasion, we were served breakfast while friends who had been at an adjoining table for some time, waited a while thereafter to finally be served. Another shortcoming, perhaps endemic in the UK, servers deliver your food and fail ever to check back for comments or additional requests. Occasionally, someone asks for reactions at conclusion of a meal during your exit. Some training may be in order. Breakfast is a set, unchanging menu, identical to that encountered a year ago. Staff are extraordinarily friendly and helpful. Some staff members’ families have been associated with the property for many years in various capacities. In all, our latest stay was highly enjoyable and memorable.
Beautiful place for everything!!! Service was unbeatable, staff are amazing and couldn’t do enough for us… Sunday lunch on the terrace was absolutely glorious! Food was amazing, gardens and wonderful staff that serve every requirement needed!! Will highly recommend and definitely will be back! Tomorrow actually!!
We had afternoon tea here and I am so impressed! The portion sizes were very generous and everything was clearly freshly, homemade. It’s the best afternoon tea experience I’ve ever had! The staff were incredibly helpful and polite and the grounds are just beautiful.
We stayed about 18 months ago before the refurbishment. This visit was a pleasant surprise. The dining room has moved and the decor has been subtly changed. Overall I like the new look. We booked through secret escapes and had a "package" which included a suite, breakfast and evening meals. As always the hotel staff were friendly, polite and efficient. The dinner menu had a good choice and it was good to see English local wines on the menu. Breakfast was good, but although there is a basic continental selection you order it via the serving staff rather than choose from a buffet. The hotel was spotless and the grounds well cared for. The hotel doesn't have spa facilities but you can use the one at the Sussex National which is the sister hotel. We had a lovely stay here for my birthday and will definitely go back.
We have just retuned from a fabulous weekend at the Horsted Hotel. The staff were amazing and so attentive to our needs. Every detail was meet with such a relaxed and high standard. The rooms were so very clean and spacious. We stayed in the Sussex room and highly recommend this room with lovely sunsets to be seen. The food was exceptional with the best Sunday roast I have ever enjoyed. We had a lovely time and I would highly recommend booking though secret escapes as you get the evening and breakfast included with a glass of champagne on arriving. Thank you all at the hotel. Your amazing Garry and Ruth Perkins
